By Paul Soule

The Cavaliers 06' PeeWee team finished up a great weekend of hockey with a 2-1 win over the Canton Bulldogs in the Championship Game Sunday afternoon.

The Cavs started off the weekend with a 7-1 win over the Groton Crusaders Friday night and then followed it up with a victory over the East Coast Wizards on Saturday morning winning 5-1. The Cavs had previously been beaten by both the Crusaders and Wizards in VHL league play this season. On Saturday afternoon the Canton Bulldogs handed the Cavs their only loss of the weekend with a 3-1 final.

With a record of 2-1 the Cavs secured the 2nd place seed in Sunday's playoff rounds. The first matchup had the Cavs in a rematch with the East Coast Wizards, with the winner headed to the Championship Game. The Wizards lead the game 1-0 until Jack Michaud tied things up with a shorthanded goal. Three periods weren't enough as the game headed to overtime. At the end of the overtime period the game was still tied at 1-1 and they headed to a shootout. Jake Dodge scored on the Cavs first attempt, followed by Cavs goalie Jake O'Brien shutting down the Wizards on their first attempt. Luke Vella was up next for the Cavs and he made the most of his chance as he wristed one past the Wizards goalie. With the Cavs up 2 goals to none the Wizards had to score to stay alive, but Jake O'Brien made a great pad save and the Cavs were heading to the Finals!

The only loss of the weekend so far had come at the hands of the Canton Bulldogs. So it was no surprise that the Cavs would face Canton once again in the Championship game. The Cavs would go up 1-0 with a goal off a Nick Thurlow shot. Canton would soon tie things up at 1 and we knew it was going to go down to the wire. Late in the 3rd, with a scrum in front of the Canton net, Gilly Lilly buried what would be the game winner!! The Cavs defense would hold strong for the final few minutes of the game securing the win!!

Congratulations to Coaches Kelly, Lilly, Dodge and entire 06' team!!
